Perth's bathhouse scene is newer than Melbourne's and growing fast. Here's the honest guide: which one suits which person, what the water actually does, and the one option that never makes the lists because it isn't a bathhouse at all.
We run that last one. We've been specific about where the bathhouses are the better choice.
By what each place is actually best at, honest pricing, and who it suits. Bathhouses are a different product from what we run, so the top of this list is places you'd go instead of us.
Heat. Hot water immersion is the strongest passive heat stimulus there is. A 2025 University of Oregon study (American Journal of Physiology) compared hot water immersion, traditional sauna and infrared head to head: hot water produced the largest core temperature rise, the biggest cardiovascular response, and the only measurable immune response. Soaking is roughly what moderate exercise does to the body.
Connection and ritual. Ember built Perth's category around this: 90 minutes of hot, cold, steam and rest, with other people, phones away. For many that social quiet is the point.
Heat is a stress the body adapts to. That's good for the body and it's the opposite mechanism to switching off a wired nervous system.
A 2021 fMRI study (Al Zoubi and colleagues, Human Brain Mapping) found that after a float, the brain's body-monitoring network disconnects from its inner-narrative network. A 2024 study (Hruby and colleagues, Scientific Reports) found that dissolution of body boundaries is what drives the anxiety reduction. A 2023 trial (Garland and colleagues, Journal of Mood and Anxiety Disorders) tracked people afterwards: anxiety stayed significantly below baseline for 48 hours.
None of that comes from hot water. Hot water adds input. Floating removes every input the nervous system reacts to. If you're going to a bathhouse because you're wired off swing, sleepless or anxious, you're using a cardiovascular tool for a nervous system problem. Our guide to how long float benefits last walks through all 11 studies.
Perth bathhouses sell their pools on magnesium. "Hot mineral bath", "healing magnesium bath". Worth knowing what that means.
A magnesium pool is a pool with magnesium chloride added, typically around 600 to 800 parts per million, less than a tenth of 1% by weight. It's a water treatment system, gentler on skin and eyes than chlorine alone, and good for that purpose.
A float tank holds 500 to 600 kilograms of magnesium sulphate in roughly 1,000 litres, around a 30% solution. Several hundred times the concentration, and it's there to do a measurable job: the water becomes dense enough that you float without effort, taking gravity off the spine.
The honest part for both of us: evidence that anyone absorbs meaningful magnesium through intact skin is weak, for pools and floats alike. A 2017 review (Gröber and colleagues, Nutrients) found transdermal magnesium claims weren't scientifically supported. If a bathhouse sells you magnesium absorption from a 0.07% pool, that's marketing. We don't sell it from a 30% tank either. The salt is for buoyancy, and buoyancy is the point.
Every Perth bathhouse is shared water. For a lot of people that's the problem: the person who wants silence after 2 weeks on site, the person who doesn't want to be seen in swimwear, the woman who can't use heat right now.
Beyond Rest runs the private version at East Perth and Wembley. A float is your own room, your own tank, your own shower, $89 casual or $55 to 65 on packs. Contrast is your own sauna and your own ice bath, filled fresh for your session, 45 minutes from $79. Wembley opens 6am Mondays for the first morning back from swing. Float tank Perth.
Choose a bathhouse if: you want heat, company, ritual and an afternoon. Choose private if: you want the deepest nervous system reset the research has measured, in silence, with no thermal load and no one else.
Hot water and sauna are contraindicated in pregnancy, and for many women in perimenopause heat triggers the hot flushes and broken sleep they're trying to fix. A float is skin-temperature water with no thermal load, the one option on this page with no heat caution at all.
"Bathhouses are brilliant at heat and company. We do the other thing. When someone walks in wired, the deepest off-switch we've found in 13 years is an hour in a tank with nothing to react to," says Nick Dunin, founder of Beyond Rest.
Ember Bath House in Osborne Park is the benchmark for the full ritual. Merse Wellness for a contrast-focused session. Solace for a spa-and-bathhouse combination.
Not in the shared-pool sense. The private equivalent is a float room or a private contrast session at Beyond Rest (East Perth, Wembley), where the water is yours alone.
Gentler on skin and eyes than chlorine-only pools. Evidence for absorbing meaningful magnesium through skin is weak for any bath or tank. The magnesium in a float tank is there for buoyancy.
If you're wired and not sleeping, the float evidence is the relevant evidence. Book within 48 hours of landing. Wembley opens 6am Mondays.
