The wellness industry's response has mostly been to slap the word "detox" on existing products. We run detox-adjacent equipment ourselves, so here's the version we'd want to read: what you can actually do, ranked by evidence, with the honest limits stated.
Every serious researcher in this field says the same thing: reducing intake beats attempting removal. The big routes in: bottled water and plastic-contact drinks, heated plastic food contact, household dust, and synthetic fibres. The next 3 entries are the practical version.
Bottled water carries substantially more microplastic than tap water, and quality filtration (activated carbon and especially reverse osmosis) removes a large share of particles. The single cheapest swap with the biggest volume effect: a filtered jug or under-sink unit, and a steel or glass bottle.
Heat accelerates plastic shedding, so the priority order: never microwave in plastic, don't pour boiling liquid into plastic, swap scratched plastic containers and boards for glass, steel or wood, and be suspicious of plastic kettles and pod machines. Cold plastic contact matters far less than hot.
A meaningful share of intake is inhaled or swallowed household dust: ventilate, vacuum with a HEPA filter, damp-dust, and favour natural fibres in bedding and clothing where practical (synthetic textiles shed with every wash; a washing machine lint filter helps too).
Can you get microplastics OUT? Here's the honest state of the science. Published research (the Genuis "blood, urine and sweat" studies) found that some plastic-associated chemicals, BPA and phthalates among them, appear in sweat, sometimes when they're undetectable in blood. That work is real, and it's also small, contested, and about plastic CHEMICALS. No study has shown that sweating removes microplastic PARTICLES from the body, and anyone telling you otherwise is ahead of the evidence.
So where does that leave sauna-based tools? Honestly positioned: sweating is one of the body's excretion routes and the BPA/phthalate findings are genuinely interesting, so regular sauna use is a reasonable inclusion in a body-burden routine, held with appropriate uncertainty. What we won't do is promise that any session "pulls the toxins out." The evidence isn't there yet, and honesty is the house rule.
One observation from our own centres, offered as exactly that: staff see coloured residue on towels after Hocatt sessions constantly, and it's a running internal debate. Ozone is a strong oxidiser and interacts with skin oils, so oxidised sebum, sweat solids and dead skin are all plausible explanations. Nobody, including us, has lab-assayed it, so nobody, including us, gets to call it "toxins." If we ever test it, we'll publish what we find either way.
The organs that actually process and excrete foreign compounds are the liver, kidneys, gut and lymphatic system, and the boring things keep them working: sleep, hydration, fibre, exercise. Heat sessions support circulation and sweating within that picture (Laukkanen 2018 on sauna's cardiovascular effects), and that's the honest frame for where infrared and Hocatt sit: supporting the body's own clearance systems, with the microplastic-specific evidence still being written.
"The honest version of detox is boring: block the intake, support the organs that do the real work, and don't claim more than the science shows. We'd rather be the centre that says that out loud," says Nick Dunin, founder of Beyond Rest.
No proven method removes microplastic particles. Filtered tap water instead of bottled, zero heated plastic food contact, HEPA vacuuming and ventilation, and natural fibres where practical. Intake reduction beats removal attempts on current evidence.
